Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive Johannesburg
Upon arrival at Johannesburg Airport, please clear immigration, collect your luggage, and proceed to the arrivals hall where your driver will be waiting to transfer you to your hotel in city. The rest of the day is at leisure.
Overnight: Johannesburg
Day 2: Johannesburg – Pemba – Mongundula Island
After an early breakfast, you will return to the airport for your onward flight to Pemba. You will be met at the airport and shown to your transfer vehicle for the approx. 3-hour road transfer to Mucojo, and dhow transfer to Mogundula Island.
Mogundula Island is one of the best islands in the archipelago which is why we spend 2 nights here giving you a fantastic base from which to explore. Known by the locals as the island with the sacred lake it provides us with beautiful bird watching, pristine swimming off the sandbank beach and excellent snorkeling. Our mobile camp is set under the shade of trees and you usually have this magical uninhabited island to yourself!

Day 3: Mongundula Island
After breakfast today, you will take a Dhow trip to the Pangane Peninsula and Macaloe Island before returning to camp for dinner.

Day 4: Mongundula Island – Quirimbas Archipelago – Ulumbwa
Today, you will depart Mogundula for your exploration into the Quirimbas Archipelago! Sail into the clearest of blue water with pristine corals below to explore under snorkel. The Ulumbwa river mouth beckons and it is here where fascinating rural fishing villages dot the shore. Tonight you have the chance to camp in the open Mozambique bush south of Ulumbwa.

Day 5: Ulumbwa – Matemo Island - Ulumbwa
After another breakfast under the morning sky, you will set off on your day trip to Matemo Island. Turquoise clear waters and beautiful scenery awaits you en route, but before enjoy an early morning sail up the Ulumbwa estuary viewing a variety of birds & mangroves that thrive in this area.
In the afternoon, take a tour through this fishing village getting to know the ways of these fisher folk as interpreted by your knowledgeable guide. You will stop on the southern tip of Matemo Island and explore this part of the island, before returning to camp at Ulumbwa.

Day 6: Ulumbwa – Ibo Island
Today, you will make your way from the Ulumbwa Region to Ibo Island.
Ibo Island lodge has spectacular views over the waterfront and accommodates guests in beautifully simple yet elegant rooms. Historic colonial mansions with high ceilings have been stylishly renovated to accommodate the lodge with various verandas, tropical gardens and a spectacular roof top restaurant that provides the ideal venue to watch the sun go down. The emphasis at Ibo Island Lodge is on complete relaxation and a base from which to explore this fascinating island.

Day 7: Ibo Island
After breakfast today, you will enjoy a guided tour of Ibo’s ghost town. Probably the most compelling attraction in the Quirimbas, Ibo's 200-year-old ghost town and 16th Century forts make for a fascinating journey to an era long forgotten. The Ibo Island guided experience (included) provides a chance to interact with the amazingly friendly local people and observe their unique island culture and heritage and a way of life that has not changed for hundreds of years. Wander around the mysterious ruins amongst forts and ancient trade buildings with many fascinating stories just waiting to be told.

Day 8: Ibo Island
Today is yours to do as you please! We recommend taking the complimentary transfer to the private sandbank beach for snorkelling, swimming and a picnic lunch.
